Frequently Asked Questions
Interested in learning more about SunChoice? Click on any of the questions below for more details about the program.
Is there a cost to sign up?
One of the benefits of the SunChoice program is that there are no initial enrollment costs, regardless of what percentage you subscribe to.
What are the eligibility requirements?
You must be an OUC commercial electric customer to subscribe. Customers may enroll at any time but must remain enrolled for at least three (3) billing periods after enrollment. A customer may cancel thereafter with 30 days’ notice and enroll again after 6 months if the program is available.
OUC will have renewable energy credits associated with the customer’s Solar Energy subscription Green-e® certified and will retire them in the customer’s name on their behalf.
What exactly am I purchasing?
You are not purchasing physical equipment, but rather offsetting a portion of solar power produced by an existing utility-scale array located at diverse locations throughout Central Florida. You will receive your subscribed amount of solar energy as a percentage of your usage. You only pay a solar rate (in lieu of the fuel rate you would normally pay) to participate – no maintenance fees or installation costs.
How does the power I subscribe to get to my business?
The power generated by the solar farms is not directly fed into your business but rather goes straight into OUC’s electric grid to offset other fuel sources.
How much solar energy am I allowed to use and what are the rates?
You can subscribe for all or a portion of your electric bill to be powered by solar energy. You can opt for a percentage of your electric usage in 10% increments with a tiered solar rate. The percentage of your energy not supplied by solar power will be supplemented with traditional energy options from our diverse fuel portfolio.
SunChoice Solar Energy Rates:
- First 30% subscription 1.0¢ per kWh
- Next 40% subscription 2.5¢ per kWh
- Next 30% subscription 4.5¢ per kWh
For example, if a customer uses 3000 kWh of energy per month and subscribes to 80% of SunChoice solar, below is an example of how the rate will be used:
Tiered Rate Schedule | Monthly SunChoice Cost |
---|---|
3000 at 30% = 900 kWh @ .01 | $9 |
3000 at 40% = Next 1200 kWh @ .025 | $30 |
3000 at 10% = Next 300 kWh @ .045 | $13.50 |
3000 at 80% = 2400 kWh | $52.50 |
What if the solar farm is damaged by weather or can’t produce at its maximum capacity?
OUC’s diverse fuel options ensure power production is never interrupted. If the solar farm were to become unable to produce energy, your home would not be affected.
What are Green-e® Energy certified Renewable Energy Certificates?
Green-e® Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) provide verified proof that one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity has been generated from a renewable energy source. As the leading certification for RECs in North America, Green-e® ensures that both the renewable energy generation and its sales comply with strict environmental and consumer protection standards.
By receiving Green-e® Energy Certified RECs, businesses can legitimately claim the environmental benefits of renewable energy, helping them meet sustainability goals and showcase their commitment to environmental leadership.
Since 1997, Green-e®—a program of the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions based in San Francisco, CA—has set the highest standards for renewable energy and carbon offset products in North America.
